The Secret of a Chanel 2.55 Classic Bag Revealed

“An icon Bag is a friend for life…”  wrote Harrie Quick in Vogue in 2003 and we couldn’t agree more at Luxury Promise. It’s not hard to see the enduring appeal of classic bags, especially those from a handful of French heritage labels like Chanel. A great example of this is the perennial classic Chanel Flap Bag based on the original 2.55 inception by Coco Chanel (the acronym is based on the launch of the Flap bag Feb 1955) with such an enduring history and legacy did you know that the bag features many functions and hidden stories such as….

  1. CC turnstile lock
It was created by the late Karl Karlagefeld upon his appointment at Chanel in 1983. The lock is affectionately known as ‘Mademoiselle’ lock as Coco Chanel never married.

  2. Diamond quilting
The signature diamond quilting is known in the industry as ‘Matalasse’ it has been said that Chanel was inspired by the quilting from her love of horse riding and equestrian accessories.

  3. Chain Strap
The movable chain strap allowed women to go hands free. Inspired by men’s military satchels, who wore them cross body. The chain is designed to be light and strong. It’s also said that the double-chain shoulder strap was inspired by the caretakers at the orphanage Gabrielle grew up in. She chose the same chains that the nuns used to dangle keys from their waists. Regardless of the origin, Chanel wanted the chain straps to look like jewellelry with the convenience of a satchel for the modern woman.

  4. Burgundy Lining

It is said that the burgundy contrasting lining that Chanel classic flap bags are known for was inspired by the uniform that Chanel had to wear at the Aubazine orphanage where she was raised. It also acts as a practical function, with the contrasting lining making it easy for one to spot and find one’s items.

     5     Back Pocket

The back pocket acts as a practical and aesthetic purpose, Chanel initially designed the back pocket as a way of easy access and to store cash, the slight dip in the pocket it has been said Coco had a love for the Mona Lisa and made the back pocket reminiscent of her subtle smile.
